About loot
loot is a Hack Club program that gives kids Robux in exchange for building real coding projects, instead of buying them.
How it works
Your child signs up with their email and a Hack Club account, picks a project (a website, a browser game or a small web app) and writes code in their browser. When they finish, they publish the project and a Hack Club reviewer checks it. Once it's approved, Hack Club sends them Robux for the time they spent coding, up to a limit for the first project. After that, they can keep building in a regular code editor, with Hackatime counting their hours, and keep earning.
Who runs it
loot is run by Hack Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 81-2908499) that supports teenagers learning to code. You can learn more at hackclub.com.
How it's funded
Hack Club is funded by charitable donations and by fees from HCB, a financial platform Hack Club runs for student organizations, hackathons and other nonprofits. Hack Club pays for the Robux. Families never pay anything, loot shows no ads, and we don't sell personal data.
What we collect
- The email your child enters to get started, so Hack Club can reach them about loot and other programs.
- The Hack Club account they sign in with (name, email and verification status). Verification is required before a reward is approved.
- A repository on your child's own GitHub account that holds their project's code. The finished project is also published at a public link.
- Coding activity. While your child works, loot saves a snapshot of their project every couple of minutes and records how long they've actively coded, including large pastes. Reviewers use this to confirm the project is your child's own work.
Safety
- loot never asks for payment, Robux or passwords. Sign-in happens on hackclub.com and github.com.
- Projects run in a sandbox, without access to the internet or to your child's accounts.
- A person at Hack Club reviews every project before a reward is approved.
Age requirements
Participants must be between 13 and 18 years old.
